Kitchen Renovation 2013: It’s beginning! (&and& basketball + work wanderings)

After a week spent remembering a great teammate who passed away, life marches on, and acceptance sets in.  I have joined another team, a women’s league.  It’s different, because I haven’t played with women in years.  Since Ron and I got married, I have played primarily on a men’s league at the gym.  It’s a well run league, and we played for the championship at least three times in the past five years.  Ron and I even played together the first couple seasons.  Women play differently, but smarter.  It’s spacing and fast breaks and quick cuts.  It’s different and fun.

Jen and I worked together today, fun times.  We mowed two parks and laughed a lot.  We think we could put together a fun podcast based on our conversations.  Sometimes I wonder if anybody would find us as funny as we find ourselves.

And to the main point…

The kitchen renovation is “underway”, just a little bit.  We have in our garage the professional hood we bought on labor day weekend.  We have a kitchen design, cabinet plan, lighting plan, plumbing plan, landing redesign plan, and a work weekend planned!  Lots of planning and were about to take this to the next level.

The kitchen was the first change we made to the house. We opened up a light box in a dropped ceiling and we took down some cabinets over the sink.  There is so much to see in the above photo.  The cabinet sits off to the left, and behind Ron is a kitchen that we never used.  Ron’s family came up to help us make some changes, what a blessing they were.  When they arrived we got to work.  I remember talking with Ron in the Home Depot parking lot in his little white truck about scaling back the scope of our projects.  In the end, we ripped out two walls (and a fire place), moved the washer and dryer to the garage, raised the ceiling in the kitchen and dining room, and close to gutted the kitchen.  See…

We got everything except for the kitchen settled, and really like the changes we have made to this house.  Now, four years and four months after we bought the house, we are getting underway to make the kitchen a reality.

This weekend will include demolition, shopping, and more research/shopping.  I, for one, am really looking forward to it.

It’s really amazing to see all the work you guys have put into this house! I love that you guys aren’t afraid to dig in and make it happen. I can’t wait to see the new kitchen :-).

Love the photos! If your putting in a new dishwasher, consider the Miele. We put one in and it is by far the best appliance I’ve ever owned! You don’t have to rinse the dishes and the glass comes out perfect! It’s a little pricey but really, really worth it. Good luck & can’t wait to see the finished product!
